This was the first Brutum Fulmen album, and it got great
reviews. A limited edition tape version released by
freedom from records sold out.
No synthesizers or traditonal musical instruments were employed. The sounds were edited,
collaged and arranged mostly without effects of any sort being applied. Reverb was used in some
places and in a few places the recording levels were allowed to clip, distorting the sound.
- Shedding Skin
Inspired by the shrieking squeaks of a cheap cassette in the tape deck of an old Toyota
station wagon. The creaking of a gooseneck stand and the rumbling of a dumpster pounded
by hand complete the source material. Many people find this one particularly annoying.
- Ivy Covered Ruins
Forks & spoons, a pneumatic screen door hinge, a garage door locking mechanism, a dumpster lid,
a heap of rusted sheet metal, water tricking through an underground pipe, an oven door & rack, and
cinderblocks rubbed against pavement come together hear in a relatively peaceful manner.
- (untitled)
An improvised rhythmic duet pounded out by bare hands on huge pipes in an underground sewer pumping station.
- Oblivion
Built around the squeaking of a merry-go-round in an abandoned playground at a military base,
"Oblivion" has at times a strangely trumpet- or oboe-like sound. Also includes the sounds of a metal
pipe dragged across cement, a large crumpled rusted mass of sheet metal, banging on a metal pipe in
an underground sewer pumping station, and the hinges of a creaky men's room door at a Hoboken parking garage.
- Subconscious
A subtle atmospheric piece created from the not so delicate sounds of various generators, an
electric pipe bender, a sewer pumping station water pipe, and a swimming pool filter.
- Amputate
Microphone windshear and other sounds gathered from large industrial fans and air conditioning
units are the main element. Recorded too hot and then boosted some more after the fact to maximize
the distortion. A bit of a precursor to Spork, but if I had it to do over, I would have either
made this piece a whole lot shorter or left it off entirely.
- Symphony
A piece originally recorded for the WKCR July 1997 noise festival, and kicked off the "Americans"
section of the 72-hour festival. This 20 minute track ranges from the low atmospheric pounding of large
industrial dumpsters and playground slides, to the ear splitting violence of metal-on-metal friction.
The first actual Brutum Fulmen work.
